Ephraim will be holding two Plein-Air Landscape Oil Painting Workshops in Central Park, New York City. These workshops will provide training in direct plein-air landscape painting utilizing various areas in beautiful Central Park as a location. The workshop will be open to both beginning students who have never worked outside before, and also to more advanced students who wish to refine their plein-air handling. The course will address such issues as the difference between direct and indirect approaches to oil painting in the landscape; topographical versus atmospheric emphasis; and the notion of space composition. The class will offer practice in handling changing light and weather conditions, as well. You must have a folding French easel, or something similar.

Each workshop runs for a week from 9:00AM- 12:30PM. The first session is from July 7-11, 2014, and the second is from August 11-15, 2014. Either session can be taken separately. There is a small discount for enrolling in both. For details, visit the Art Students League’s website.

I am pleased to announce that I will be offering two Oil Painting Workshops at the Art Students League of New York this April, 2014. The two workshops are back-to-back; the weekend of April 5-6 (all-day), and during the week of April 7-11 in the mornings. You may sign-up for them individually or together.

While both are Introductions to Oil Painting, the weekend workshop is an information-packed course that gives an introduction to basic materials and methods and utilizes still-life objects. While the second week-long class is also an Introductory class, it can accommodate painters of all skill levels, it uses the model rather than still life, and is meant to be an opportunity to put into practice all of the information that you have been given.

Since I usually teach Life Drawing at the ASL, this is an opportunity for those of you who wish to study oil painting with me. Ephraim’s 1990 silverpoint drawing, “Maddie Asleep”, is reproduced in Jerry Weiss’s article, “Precious Metal”, in the Winter 2014 issue of The Drawing Magazine. The article reviews the recent Silverpoint exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York City, curated by Sherry Camhy.

Drawing Magazine is available at Barnes & Nobles bookstores, as well as at magazine stores and The Drawing Magazine website. (Another reason to buy the magazine is that there is an excellent portrait drawing demonstration by Ephraim’s friend Costa Vavagiakis. Costa’s incredible drawing of “Rainbow XII” is on the cover!)

A full-length feature article about Ephraim’s work appears in the current issue (January/February 2014) of The Artist’s Magazine.

“Life is a House” explores Ephraim’s use of houses as metaphors in his work. As the Editor writes, “Contemporary realist Ephraim Rubenstein explores how images of houses can be powerful statements about the human condition as well as meditations on the passage of time.” Written by Ephraim himself, the article contains reproductions of nine of his paintings, as well as a step-by-step demonstration of a complex passage from one of the works.

“The Silverpoint Exhibition” at The National Arts Club is a pivotal investigation of the art of silverpoint by contemporary artists. The artists in this exhibition have been lured by the magic of the medium, enticed into delving into the search for the perfect formula for the perfect surface and tempted into exploring the haunting qualities of silverpoint with their unique vision. They are free from the limitations of materials that bound the old masters. Contemporary artists are using this revered old medium in unexpected new ways.
