Cityscape in “The League of Masters” at the New York Design Center

The League of Masters: Past & Present: Works by The Art Students League Teachers and Students celebrates the League’s continuing tradition of supporting artists, exhibiting significant works by past League masters such as Hans Hofmann, Burgoyne Diller, and Will Barnet and shifts forward to focus on the diversity and talent of more than twenty-five contemporary League artists working today. The exhibition, presented by InCollect, is on view at the New York Design Center (200 Lexington Avenue) from September 12 through October 9, 2019.

Ephraim Rubenstein’s Still-Life Painting on the Cover of “The Library Book”

Ephraim Rubenstein’s painting Book Pile XXIV has been published on the cover of the Korean language edition of Susan Orleans’ The Library Book, an account of a 1986 fire at the Los Angels County Library that destroyed over 400,000 books. This painting is part of Ephraim’s larger series of still lifes of used and discarded books.

The Art Students League’s Instructors’ Exhibition 2019 is the largest faculty annual in the school’s history with nearly one hundred works on view (digital gallery). Ephraim’s large wax-resist drawing Abu Simbel I (from a series of new work) is on view in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery through September 29.

Ephraim Rubenstein’s Portrait in
The Instructors Exhibition

Featuring works from over eighty artists who teach at the Art Students League, the Instructors Exhibition 2018 opens on September 4. Ephraim’s portrait Chris IV is one in a small grouping of works on view in the newly remodeled American Fine Arts Society’s first floor West Gallery, located to the left in the entrance foyer. An opening reception is scheduled for September 5, 5:30 – 7:30 pm. The exhibition continues through September 30.

The Quickening Image at Degenstein Gallery

The Quickening Image is a process-based exhibition, highlighting the creative potential of the wax-resist technique in drawings by David Dodge Lewis and Ephraim Rubenstein. Their approach integrates a range of standard drawing materials in a single image, using both wet and dry applications. The show, which has been traveling over the past several years to different venues across the country, will open at the Lore Degenstein Gallery at Susquehanna University (Selinsgrove, PA) on September 1 and continue through October 7, 2018. An opening reception has been scheduled for September 1, 7 to 9 p.m., with the artists giving a gallery talk beginning at 7:30 p.m.
