For the fourth year, the Art Students League is sponsoring a two-week workshop in Florence, Italy. This year’s trip runs April 30 – May 14 and is led by League instructor Ephraim Rubenstein.
Students on the trip share comfortable, fully-furnished apartments with kitchens, provided by the League’s partner: Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence. Our painting program will consist of working out of doors. Sites will include public spaces such as Piazza Santa Maria Novella and the pivotal monument of Alberti’s façade of the church of Santa Maria Novella; the Baroque Piazza and church of Ognissanti; and the Boboli Gardens. Each location affords a unique experience in the challenges of cityscape and landscape painting – close urban environments, long vistas, perspective, architecture and topography – all suffused by the light of Tuscany. If challenged by weather we will seek cover among the numerous loggias throughout the city or make use of our dedicated space available in SACI’s well-equipped studios.
Integral to this workshop is the study of the rich history of art at almost every turn of the corner in Florence. As a group we will have planned excursions* to the Uffizi, the Vasari Corridor, the Academia, San Marco, the Palatine Galleries of the Pitti Palace, Santa Maria Novella, and the Brancacci Chapel. Students are encouraged to also take advantage of other key monuments – the Medici Chapels, the Bargello, the Duomo and the Palazzo Vecchio, among others. While the focus of the workshop will be painting, instruction will also touch upon key ideas and readings that have come down to us through the centuries, some originating in or directly related to Florence.
